Fed Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Calendar Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the Fed. The institution has been under immense pressure to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of important economic data has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies BLS data to determine employment trends, including the count of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its publication when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, a trend he had previously said comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
