Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 Test matches with an stellar bowling average.
The Australian chair of selectors the selector has stated that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in this winter's historic rivalry.
Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.
Initial reports from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding whether he would play, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on November 21 in Perth.
The selector shared that his recovery is on track and felt positive about his chances of being involved.
"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, not just the back issue, but further aspects," he commented.
"It's positive. We firmly believe that he's going to play a significant role. Hopefully it's the first Test. If not, we'll reassess."
Previous Setbacks
He was sidelined the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with recurrences in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.
He emphasized he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the contest.
Bailey noted that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.
Alternative Arrangements
In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.
The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their one-day international series against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
The selector characterized it as a "small issue and stated that he's scheduled to appear in the state-level matches, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."
"Extensive planning has gone into building out the plan for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.
"His involvement was limited to the starting games anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
